I'm not surprised that there's no review of this place as I think it's a local's place and not frequently visited by tourists. However, this was the FIRST pub I decided to visit on my first night in Oxford and it certainly wasn't the last. It has a GREAT selection of beers that changes often and a great friendly staff. The atmosphere is unique. Definitely a place where the locals hang out. This is down the street on James Street, so definitely a neighborhood pub that could be overlooked when you are walking along Cowley. I recommend checking it out. I have become known here and feel like a local myself! At my last visit, the bartenders and friends had a hose fight, even running into the flat spraying water inside. So this tells you a lot about the atmosphere.

James street is a lot like any other pub on the back roads off cowley. They are all fine but nothing special.
James Tavern has no parking but it is literally just down the cowley rd, on the right if your walking from town - near to but opposite that big church and princess street.
As the post above mentioned they do offer free sandwiches sometimes - but not all the time, so poke your head in and look first if your hungry lol!
It is fairly popular with students though most choose to wonder up to the more expensive Hob for some reason or on up to the cheap city arms (my fav).
What this place has got going for it is the pool tables. It is free to play pool here (or at least it used to be) on a couple of days in the week - all day. so if pool is your game then you will enjoy that. -

I've been in there once and must say that the soul in that place was missing. It was such a shame to see that as it has great potential to be such great Gastro- Pub. I think it needs a few fairy lights and it needs to be done up with a bit of love.
The people in there were nice but that didn't do enough for me, unfortuantely. -

The James street Tavern now has a new landlord and new image, I was in there on the weekend and it has only just opened 21st March 2009, Lance who used to be gen Manager of the PT is the guy and as with the PT he is going to host theme events like bands, Djs etc, The Tvs and Pool tables are out and tables for good food are in, the back garden has been cleaned from all the dog shite and new plants are being added for a lovely sunny summer mood, there is going to be a South African day in April with good SA food, I will def go for that. So all the best to Lance and Helen
